Socializing your kitten must be begun by your kitten's breeder. When the kittens are born, their eyes are closed but their sense of touch and smell are active. Ragdoll kittens open their eyes in the 7 to 14 day range, at this age, gentle handling once a day is all that is necessary. This time is used to gently examine each kitten to detect any minor or major health problems. The kitten's body temperature, condition of their eyes, coat, and skin are carefully noted. The weight of each kitten is also compared to the average weight of litter mates. This early contact also allows the kittens to accept, at the earliest possible age, random acts of human kindness. The kittens begin to exhibit independence from their mothers at about 3 to 4 weeks. |

At approximately 5 weeks (each kitten is different) the process of weaning begins with replacement foods. This is an excellent opportunity to provide the kitten with nourishment from human hands. Using the tip of the finger or a plastic spoon, the kittens can be offered replacement foods (see "Feeding Your Kitten"). This further extends the trust between kitten and human members of the household. |
This socialization--from the earliest age--occurs during a critical window. By the time the kitten reaches the age of 6 weeks the opportunity for creating a unique bond may be lost. Beyond 6 weeks of age, playtime is the best way to socialize your kitten. Visit the "Play Time" page for tips and information on toys you kitten will love. |
